MY LIFE
My earliest experiments with fine art photography were exhibited in San Francisco Bay Area galleries and public spaces in the late 1960s. Fade out, fade in: after decades spent writing, working in digital media and living several other lives in between, I returned to the camera in my eighth decade.
The fascination was still there—the way light can transform an ordinary subject in an instant—but I had become more interested in distillation: finding the one gesture, color, reflection or moment that allows an image to remain vivid long after the instant itself has disappeared.
MY ART
Photography begins for me with recognition: a great egret erupting into white against black, a desert rose caught in extraordinary light, the last minutes of color above the Everglades, an architectural form suddenly made strange, or a city dissolving into reflection and motion.
Some of my photographs whisper; others announce themselves from across the room. What connects them is attention—the attempt to distill what first stopped me without stripping away the mystery that made me stop. A feather, a flower, a reflection, a solitary figure or a narrow band of light across a very large sky: these are all part of what I call The Art of Little Things
